CIT49900 Emerging Technologies Semester Project

Imagine a site that could organize all the events of the world on a central calendar.  A browser add-on recognizes dates and calendar data on the web & offers to place it on the central calendar. Individuals add their personal events, appointments, meetings, tasks and due dates to the calendar privately or publicly. Every person, group, organization and government agency publishes their event information to be discovered by the calendar. Users easily filter the events that interest them and can save multiple calendars for themselves and/or others with overlay features. Users synchronize filtered calendars with all of their devices or set each device to sync with a unique filter (including object status1). It is critically important that the calendar can be updated in a wide variety of ways. I foresee a site that is as commonly used as Wikipedia for helping manage our daily lives.
These are just some of the ideas I have for a project in my Emerging Technologies course. I will research the existing standards for exchanging calendar data and write about the benefits and limitations for each of them. I will also explore the calendaring sites that are already available on the web.  I will compare these sites to reveal how I can improve upon their capabilities and avoid repeating the mistakes they made. I will be especially interested in how easily events can be added to the calendar and from what medium.
My findings will be assembled into a business plan and presented as the final deliverable on this project.
